Biodegradable Urns: Understanding Your Options
|
Environmentally friendly biodegradable urns, earth urns and paper urns offer families an eco-sensitive alternative. Biodegradable urns come in two basic types: urns designed for water burial and urns designed for ground burial. Here's an easy-to-follow summary of each type.

Biodegradable Urns: Water Burial
|

• Burial at sea (or other body of water): Designed to float for several minutes, then descend gracefully to the depths where they will gently release ashes and biodegrade completely within about 24 hours.
• Water scattering: Many styles can be opened so that some or all of the ashes can be scattered on the surface prior to placing in the water.
• Materials:Made of non-toxic biodegradable materials such as renewable mulberry bark, cast paper or natural clay. All of our biodegradable urns include a non-toxic water soluble bag to contain ashes inside the urn.
• Options:The rigid designs made of cast paper and natural clay (the five styles on the right above) can be specially coated to remain stable indoors for years prior to the water burial. (Request coating when placing your order.)
• Special notes:
- All the water burial urns shown above are also suitable for biodegradable land burial.
- Many families choose to retain a small portion of ashes for cremation jewelry or other cremation keepsakes.

Biodegradable Urns: Ground Burial

• Biodegradable burial:Designed to be be buried or placed outside in a natural environment where they will naturally biodegrade.
• Ashes scattering:All designs are lidded so that some or all of the ashes can be scattered on the surface of the ground at a well-loved location.
• Materials: Made of non-toxic biodegradable materials such plant fibers and recycled paper with other natural materials such as flower petals and leaves. All of our biodegradable urns include a non-toxic water soluable bag to contain ashes inside the urn.
• Special notes:
- Ground burial urns should not be used for water burial as they are not designed to sink.
- Many families choose to retain a small portion of ashes for cremation jewelry or other cremation keepsakes.
• Available styles:Note that there are additional styles and colors available for each of the sample designs shown above.
